Parents, Thanks For All You Do

You're my biggest blessing.

Parents, Thanks For All You Do
Paige Elizabeth Sigle

So, normally, you see these things directed at a mom or a dad. But it's not often you see it together, and that's what I'm here to do.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm here to thank you. Thank you for everything you've done to get me where I am today. Thank you for everything you're still doing to make sure I go even further in life. Thank you for teaching me all of the important things in life. (And trust me, I know I'm nowhere near done learning.)

For example,

• A good work ethic. It's because of my two hardworking parents that I am the type of employee I am. I'm not lazy when it comes to my job. I'm always eager to work, and learn new things on top of that.

• To worry about nothing, and to pray about everything. You guys have made sure to always remind me that everything is in God's hands. I've never worried about my problems, because you've always taught me that God is bigger than everything.

• You've taught me how to be kind. You two have the most kind hearts I've ever seen in my entire life. Y'all have always put others before yourselves. It's a trait that all people should attain, but sadly some don't.

• In addition to being kind, you've taught me that others are not always so kind. You've taught me that it's OK that others may be mean, but it doesn't mean I did anything wrong, it just means I'm human.

• How to hoard plastic bags inside other plastic bags. I mean, where would we be without our collection of 200 Walmart bags?

• When people come to your house, feed them. I swear my mom is always cooking for someone, y'all.

That's just a few things. I could go on for days. My parents are humble, kind and hardworking people.

They've made sure that I always have what I need and want in life. I'm not sure where or who I'd be without them, and that's a life I don't even want to imagine.

Now trust me, there have been times that I haven't always shown my appreciation. But why? Who knows ... they've never deserved the attitude I've given. But, even when I feel like I don't deserve it, they still love me and stick by my side.

There have also been plenty of times I thought, "I can do things by myself," and trust me, if you're young and stupid enough to think this, you can't do it by yourself. And if you somehow find a way to do it by yourself ... it's still stupid because at the end of the day you're going to need them.

Parents are the biggest blessings in our lives, and sometimes we fail to realize it. I love you, Mamma and Daddy. Thank you for all you do.

Love always,

Your sometimes bratty daughter

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
