An Open Letter To My Brother Who's Also My Best Friend

To my older brother,

You are the one I miss the most and there isn’t a day that goes by without having you on my mind. From growing up inseparable to now being 457 miles away from each other. Some days are harder than others knowing that you aren’t just right across the hall. We have always been those weird siblings who have never fought with each other, which I can really thank you for. You have always just wanted the best for me.

You are the person I am most thankful for. You have a way of just making everyone happy and bringing so much positivity into one room. Whenever I am around you, I can’t help but have a smile on my face. You are the person that I can always turn to. You are the one that I can trust with all of my secrets. You have impacted me more than you can ever imagine. Through the good, the bad, and the ugly you are the one who is always there.

I don’t know anyone who has a kinder heart than you do. Knowing that you would drop anything whenever I need you is such a big blessing. I feel so lucky to call you my brother.

You have taught me so much in life. Whether it is school related, any advice you have given me, or just even little things you say while we are talking, I have learned so many different things. I have always considered you the “golden” child and I have always looked up to you.

You are incredibly smart, successful in anything you do, and just all around a good person. I strive to be just like you. You carry yourself with confidence and I have always been jealous of that and I am always wishing that I could be like you. You have saved me on my hardest days, been a shoulder for me to cry on, and you have been standing there with your arms wide open.

You are also the one who I have shared my best laughs and memories with. You protect if I am ever in any danger and you would never let anything bad happen to me.

Thank you for everything you have done for me. You have shaped me into the person that I am today. Thank you for always sharing everything with me, including your friends. I feel like I am the younger sister of about ten older brothers. You all make me feel like the most important person in the world. Thank you for always putting me first.

You will always be the number one person in my life. I know you will always have my back. You are the absolute best and I don’t know how I got so lucky to be able to call you my brother.

You are more than just a brother to me.

You are a role model

You are a hero

You are a teacher

But most importantly, you are my best friend

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
