To My (Not So) Little Sister

No better friend than a sister.

To My (Not So) Little Sister
Alexis Wroblewski

Dear Little Sis,

Before I start telling you how to live your life, I just wanted to let you know how much of a blessing you are in my life. Being an older sister and having you by my side growing up has impacted my life in so many ways and you mean so much to me. Being away at school has taught me so much about myself and I’ve realized how much of an impact you have had on me.

I know I tease and boss you around endlessly, but you honestly do make my life 10x better every single day. Getting to watch over you is so much fun and with every decision I make you are always in the back of my head because I always want you to be able to look up to me.

Even though we love to fight and take each others clothes, food, and makeup any chance we get (BTW I’m missing my favorite shirt), life would not be the same without you. I remember being little and getting so annoyed with you for "copying" everything I did and now somehow you’ve grown up on all of us.

I know I said I wasn’t going to tell you how to live your life but what kind of big (bossy) sister would I be if I didn’t offer a little bit of sisterly advice.

Live in the moment.

Life goes by so fast and before you know it you’ll be moving into a small closet sized dorm wondering where the last four years went. I spent most of my high school career dreaming of college and wishing I was out of high school that I didn’t take the time to appreciate everything high school is. Stop and take a moment everyday to really live in the moment and appreciate everyone you have around you at the time, they won’t always be in your life.

Stay true to yourself.

As cliche as this one is, it really is so important. You are going to meet so many people throughout high school and college and they’re all going to try to tell you different things. You’ve grown into such a strong, smart, and compassionate person that you should never ever let someone try to change your values or make you feel bad about your ideas and opinions.

Be nice to mom and dad.

I can practically see you roll your eyes at this one, but just as we’re getting older, so are they. Mom and dad were teenagers before and I bet they thought their parents were controlling and strict too, but it’s all out of love. College has taught me how much I depend on them and how they really are the best parents and my best friends. Next time you’re fighting with one of them, just know it’s out of love and you’re going to appreciate this one day.

Love,

Your Big Sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
