To My Little Sister, As You Turn 17
Scottie Stobaugh

First of all, everytime someone asks you how old you are, don't laugh like I did thinking of the scene from Twilight. Knowing your humor you probably won't think it is funny, but whatever...I do.

So back to the point, you, my dear, are finally seventeen. The last year of your life before it will change forever. Your last year to truly be a kid. So here is my advice to you.

Live every moment to the fullest. Life is beyond short and it is passing us all by so fast. Make sure you embrace every moment of life. I want you to look back on life with no regrets, knowing how you made the most of every day.

Love like it's all that you know.

You are going to fall in love, most likely more than once, and that's okay. But don't be afraid to get your heart broken, yeah it sucks but the fear shouldn't affect how you feel in the now.

Don't ever let anyone tear you down. People are mean and cruel but you can't let what they say affect the way you feel about yourself. What they say and how they feel does not define your worth. You deserve the world and the negative people are just obstacles you meet on your way to the stars.

Spread kindness.

Take the negative in your life and turn it to positive. Smile at everyone and let people know you care. Be a helping hand and a light in others lives. You never know what someone is going through so, as I know you do, make sure everyone knows they are loved.

Believe in yourself. You can do ANYTHING. I know this because these past 17 years, I have watched you follow every dream and chase down your passions. I am so proud of you.

I love you so much! Happy 17th year, sis.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
