To My High School Friend On Your Graduation Day

Dear High School Friend,

I remember almost four years ago when we graduated high school. We were young and ambitious and excited to leave our small town. Our big dreams of college and changing the world was about to become a reality. It was a great summer together, but ultimately it came time for our goodbyes as we headed off to our separate colleges. We promised to stay in touch, but it was time for us to go off on our own to college.

Freshman year was great. It was new and exciting and we had so much to share with each other. I was shy and bad at making new friends and you helped me through it by being my friend from afar. I'm really glad I had you during that time of my life. We would often make skype calls just to talk about nothing at all. We met up during every break to chat and hang out. No one could believe that we were actually real life college students and adults with the freedom to go and do whatever we wanted. We were so young and finally felt like real adults. I always look back on freshman year and think about how exciting of a time it was and how I truly felt invincible.

After freshman year, college because less about freedom and more about responsibilities. We realized that there was less spare time and more really adult responsibilities. Conversations became less common and skyping became rare, but we never failed to meet up during our breaks. I knew that not talking or hanging out as much didn't make us less of friends. We were all just really busy. Staying in touch became harder but not impossible.

Flash forward two more years and here we are at the end of your senior year. You're about to graduate and be the real life adult you've been preparing to be. I was there when your degree was only a dream and now you've finally accomplished your goal after all of your hard work. I always knew that you could do it. Even though I won't be standing by your side this time, I'll know that you deserve the excitement and rewards of graduation day and becoming a college graduate. I got to watch you grow from an awkward middle schooler, to a slightly less awkard high schooler, to finally a successful college graduate.

As you head into your adult life, I want you to remember how far you have really come. You're really accomplishing something great and it's only the beginning. I hope that you are proud of yourself on your graduation day because you truly deserve it. I look forward to seeing you again soon to celebrate and I know that we will make it as lifelong friends.

Love,

Your Friend

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
