A couple of weeks ago, my grandma had shared an Odyssey article to her Facebook in which a creator described the unique bond between her grandma and her. My grandma mentioned me in her post and told me how the article reminded her of the relationship we share. Now, what she didn’t know at the time was that I had been planning to write a similar article. I have absolutely no shame when I say that my grandma is truly one of my best friends. I’m lucky enough to have grown up with her never being more than a phone call away.
My friends have always been jealous of the special bond we share and the activities we do together. When I need to vent about my parents or siblings, she’s the first person I call. When I go shopping and spend a little too much, she’s the first one I show my new things to, because I know she’ll love them just as much as I do and will justify my purchases. We agree on almost everything, yet have the same stubborn personality and have a hard time letting go of grudges. I hate to admit it, but we love to converse about family drama over a couple scoops of ice cream. When I brought up the idea of us getting matching tattoos, she surprisingly loved the idea, and the idea became reality. How many people can say they have matching tattoos with anyone, let alone their grandma? My senior year, we escaped to Florida and created a million memories which I will never forget. Our spontaneous drive to Panama City Beach is something we still laugh about months later, along with our nightly drives to Bruster's for ice cream. Our lunch and dinner dates allow us to keep up with each other's lives.
Though I'm away at college now, I talk to her at least every other day. When I'm bored, when I have good or bad news, or when I simply just need advice, she's my go-to. There's no one else I would rather have beside me through life, and am fortunate enough to have a grandma that could watch me grow up. I know she will probably cry while reading this, but I know they'll be happy tears. I love you more than you could ever know.
