An Open Letter To My Future Self
UNH

Dear future self,

First and foremost, I hope you’re doing well. My one wish to you is that you’re healthy and living life fully. You have just graduated college recently, and I’m incredibly proud of you. I know this is a happy and saddening time for you, as you are leaving behind the life you’ve loved for four years. But keep in mind, this is just another wonderful chapter closing in your life. I do however, have some expectations and hopes for you in the future.

I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your past four years at college. Looking ahead from this moment on, I can tell you will be happy here— at UNH. It’s been an incredible first and second semester at college, so I can only imagine what the next three years will bring. You’ve been blessed to meet some amazing people that will be forever friends, I hope you keep these people in your life for a long time.

Academically, I hope you tried your absolute best. In fact, I know you did. You’re the type of person who is driven to get what they want. Don’t lose that spark. Please don’t conform to society, because that would be a sad sight. I’m proud of who you have become these past 8 months here at UNH. You’ve branched out, and are happier than ever. I hope you continue this path. I hope you take your academia life seriously, because this will bring you far in life.

I hope you follow your dreams. This is so vital in life. Sometimes people lose sight of what’s important in their lives. They get wrapped up doing day to day things. and before you know it, life is almost over. I’ve heard this story too many times before, and please do not become of this. Sure, have a family, get a steady job, but first please live. Follow the dreams you have now because those are just as important. Save up money and go on the adventures you’ve always dreamt about. Again, don’t lose your drive and spark, embrace it.

Finally, do not be afraid. I know you put on a brave face for your friends and family, I know you get scared. And that’s okay. Remember that you have so many people on your side, who love and support you. They want the best for you. So, when you think your life is going in a direction of the unknown, confide in these people. They will help you concur your biggest fears, and will stand by you for your greatest accomplishments. Don’t be afraid that you’ll ever be alone or that things won’t go your way, just know that everything happens for a reason. You’ve always believed this, so don’t let that belief go.

I hope you’re happy. I look brightly into the future and have the highest hopes for you. I can feel wondrous things will happen to you. Do not forget that you have many adventures and winding roads ahead of you, but that’s all part of the fun.

Future self,

I hope you take every day with dignity, grace, and a little bit of grit.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
