A Letter To My Future Self

Remember, everything really does happen for a reason.

Dear future self,

It is inevitable that we all grow up. We are constantly learning life lessons. Years from now, most likely everything in our life will be different from how we live our life right now. People will have come and gone. Jobs will have probably consumed you. The place we used to call home will most likely have changed. Things will go wrong and things will go right just as much. There are a few things to always remember, and I hope the future me never forgets these things.

Everything truly does happen for a reason.

There are times in our life when things need to go wrong so that things can become right later down the road. Sometimes things may not make sense in the moment, but it will all become clear at one point. We may not meet all the right people, we may not get the grade we hoped for, or we may not get our dream job when we thought we nailed the interview. It all will be for a reason and, in the end, we will be able to see that and laugh about it one day.

Forget the silly things.

We fight. We cry. We get sad. Sometimes for good reasons, but others not so much. Forget the things that won’t matter a week later. Stand up for the things and people you love but forget the things that will cause temporary problems. Those issues aren’t worth the problems that could become something much harder then it needs to be. Laugh it off and forgive the people that have done you wrong.

Family time is important.

We left for college and were so excited to get away from home. We later realize that home is better then we think it is. Don’t forget about your family. Remember that a phone call goes a long way and it is always good to hear a familiar voice and to hear what they have to say. They are the people that have been there since day one and will be there until the end. If you make them a big part of your life, then you will be living a happier life.

Never stop working hard.

The hard work that you are doing now will pay off in the end. I promise, keep going. Do not settle for less than what you deserve. If you aren’t happy with something in your life, then work harder for it to get better. You are able to make your life everything you want it to be. So, do it.

Mistakes are going to happen.

We are all figuring out this world on our own. We are supposed to mess up. Get back up after you fall and use those mistakes to better yourself and those around you. You can never be perfect; so don’t expect everything in your life to be perfect either. Accept that you made a mistake and continue on with your life.

Cherish the little things.

Laugh until you cry. Don’t regret eating that whole tub of ice cream. Love the nights in with your best friends and the nights out with them. Look out the window during car rides. Buy the pair of shoes you have always wanted. Dance as much as you can. Blare your music. Love your life. These may not seem like big things, but they are the moments that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
