Dear Future Roomie,
In less than 6 months, we will start school together at our dream university. As I prepare to graduate high school, I think about the friends I’ve made and the friend I’ve made in you. I cannot wait to move into a new dorm with my first roommate. We talk all the time, whether it be through text, Snapchat, Twitter, or FaceTime. Whenever I’m having a good or bad day in school, you’re the first person I want to tell. I guess that’s my way of preparing for the next four years. Ever since we decided to room with one another, life has gotten better. I found a companion in you, someone to go on crazy adventures with. In you, I have someone who laughs with me over the dumbest stuff. I know that when we get to school, we're going to have the best time. I’m so glad we’re in the same major, because we're going to push each other to work hard. I have no doubt in my mind that we're definitely going to party harder. We’re going to learn to love life, together. Future roommate, you will be a lifelong friend and an incredible sister.
So before we move in together, there are just 5 things I want you to know about me:
1. What’s mine is yours. I’ve always been pretty good at sharing. Growing up with my family, I’ve learned that sharing is caring. Literally. Most things, almost anything, we can share, no questions asked. Food, laundry soap, blankets, clothes, FOOD. You name it, we’ll share it.
2. Pants aren’t a thing. Ok, that probably sounds little weird, but I’ll explain. Our dorm room should feel as much like home as possible. So if that means walking around in a sports bra with shorts on or no pants at all, screaming lyrics at the top of your lungs when a good song comes on the radio, then that’s totally fine with me.
3. You’re going to become my counselor. When I’m stressed, excited, or had this unbelievable night, you’re going to be the first person I come to, I promise. I should apologize in advance for the complaints about homework, or the continuous boy drama. You’ll learn more about me than you could ever imagine, and I will take the time to learn more about you in the next four years too.
4. Let’s always be honest with each other. We’re going to piss each other off. Maybe it’ll be petty, like one day I’m hogging the remote to much, or you liking the room hot while I like it cold. Maybe it’ll be more serious, like I’m being obnoxious while you’re trying to study, or we get into a fight over the same guy. I’ll be stubborn, and so will you; it’s going to be hard to see eye-to-eye all the time. But I promise you, I’ll remind you of this letter and we will sit down like mature young adults and work it out. Not everything is going to be perfect, but we will always try and fix what needs fixing.
5. We’re going to be best friends. Our relationship is going to go so much farther than just living together. You’re my partner-in-crime now, my go-to, my family. Who else is going to be lined up with all my other bridesmaids?
So to sum it all up, I can’t wait to know you! College is like having sleepovers with your friends, every night. We’re going to binge-watch the Bachelor and eat ice cream until we pass out. We’ll have fun days where we go to the gym, dress up for a night at the club, and have brunch on the weekends. I’m so excited.
Freshman year, it’s not going to be easy, but it’ll be easier with you by my side. So yeah, here’s to a brand new beginning with my brand new friend. I hope you become the Abby Whelan to my Olivia Pope (Scandal Reference). I hope you become my person.
See you in August,
Your New Roommate
