To My Future Children, Apologies In Advance

And for all of this and more, I am sorry.

To My Future Children, Apologies In Advance
Adriana Gil

I know you might think it's kind of weird I am apologizing to you from such an early point, but I already feel like I owe you some apologies. There are a lot of things that I can't control, but will still hurt me if and when they happen or affect you. I know it may seem silly that I am apologizing for things I can not control, but I apologize for everything, a little too much sometimes.

First off, I am sorry that the world can be such a cruel place. One of my biggest fears has been having children, and them seeing the world for an ugly place. I promise you though, the whole world isn't ugly. There are some beautiful people out there. You have to try to find the good in the world or you'll quickly get lost.

I am sorry if you have a hard time finding the good. There's negativity in the world and you may feel like odds against you often. It might be because of the way you look, who you are, or what you stand for; and for that, I am sorry. I am sorry that you might be told you got into college for a "quota". That when you stand up for what you believe in, no one may listen. That those in power may be doing everything but bringing positivity to the world. I am sorry that the world is so slow to make changes. That people stand around not caring or waiting for change, instead of acting to make something happen. That if something bad ever happens, you might be dismissed and feel forgotten. That you might be treated differently than those around you. That you might wake up one day, not wanting to be you.

I am sorry that we have not only damaged our societies, but also the lives of those who had no power against us. I am sorry that mine, your father's, and the generation before us, have not treated this planet with love. We have destroyed it bit by bit and I am sorry that we will hand over to you such a toxic place. I am sorry that some animals that were around for my life will not be around for yours because of the actions we have taken. I am sorry that we have made this planet worse instead of helping it to its best.

I am sorry that your father and I won't always be there to protect you. I am sorry that you might feel alone in a world so big and you might want to give up, but you can't. I am sorry that I knowingly brought you into this world, but I am not sorry of the person you are and will become. I am not sorry about the potential you have to make a difference and the differences you will make. You have to be who you want to be. You have to stand up for what you believe in. Even when people try to silence you, you have to be louder. Do not let this cruel world win, don't let it take away the power that you have and get the best of you. You have the power to make a change, and don't let anyone tell you different.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
