To My Brother As I Come Home For The Summer

Dear brother,

I know I've been away for the past few months and you probably aren't looking forward to me coming home because it means you won't be the only child under the roof anymore, but get ready because here I come, after this finals week.

Just know that I'm excited to come home.

You've done a year of growing up since I left and I'm ready to get to tell you the stories and of the stupid stuff I've done since I've been gone. I'm also ready to hear your side of the story that mom already told me, but I'm sure your side of it is way more exciting.

I hope you know that I expect us to do a good amount of adventuring together before I have to come back to school. I know you'll probably be irritated with me and call me annoying, but you'll deal.

Just know that I realized that it won't always just be me and you.

After a year away from home, I've realized that one day we'll both choose where we want to settle down and start a real adult life. The chances of us settling down in the same place is probably slim because we are both completely different people. So me being annoying is me telling you that I love you and I miss you already.

Just know that I'm ready to teach you.

Okay so I know I'll be stressed but I am so ready to help teach you how to drive. I'm ready for you to take the wheel of Gloria and to show me what you got. Mom and Dad are both busy with work and I'm sure I will be too, but I cannot wait to help you learn how to do a big adult thing.

Just know that I still have an attitude.

I know I'm sitting here saying that you're so great and I'm ready to get along. But just remember that I haven't had anyone to fight and bicker with for almost a full year. Since you're the one that I grew up bickering with, get ready because I'm sassy and attitude-y as ever.

Just know that you're my best friend.

Being that you're my only sibling and I'd rather have a brother than a sister any day, you are my best friend. Through the years of sharing rooms, the laughs, the tears and the shared backseat through all of the road trips, you are my life best friend. So know that even when we're old, I'm going to text you even if you won't respond because you suck at texting back.

Just know that I want to be more like you.

Remember that even though I'm older, you're better than me. You're so selfless and a cool person all around and I want to be like you. So when it seems that I'm 'copying' you, it's because I have realized how cool you are in this past year.

Sorry that I embarrass you daily,

Your big sister.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
