There are approximately 7.4 billion people in the world and you chose to befriend me, so thank you. People go through life experiencing different situations and encounters with all sorts of other people. We try to put those encounters into special boxes. The recurring ones are best friends, the "from time to time" ones are casual friends, and the "only when they need something" ones are fake friends. You don't yet fit into any box, and that is a wonderful thing.
We just happened into each others' lives and we aren't that close. We're currently going through that exciting stage of learning little tidbits about each other, but we already know that we enjoy each other's company. While we saunter through the next steps toward labeling our friendship, I want to tell you how much I love that we haven't labeled it.
We don't have any expectations of each other or any past experiences with one another. We can't point to a past situation to assume how the other will act in the current one. This new friendship is a safe place for us both, one where we can be ourselves and enjoy ourselves without any restrictions.
We're comfortable, but not too comfortable. There is certainly nervousness because we don't know each other that well, and that makes it fun and exciting. There's also some comfort in knowing that we wouldn't have reached out to each other if we didn't somewhat like each other. So, it's the best of both worlds.
I don't know where you stand; you don't know where I stand. That sounds scary, but it really isn't. The beauty is that we get to navigate our friendship before any outside circumstances determine what we will be to each other.
You're a new friend to me, but I value you greatly. Whether it was the universe, God, or anything else that brought us together, I'm supremely happy that it happened. I view new friends as an addition to who I am as a person. Everyone that has ever befriended me has shaped who I've become, and that is a never-ending thing. You may stick around forever, or I may never hear from you again. Either way, you've been a part of my life.
So, thank you for taking an interest and taking on a new friendship with me. Because of that, we have had a friendship without labels or boundaries or past events that affect our future. We have been able to see each other for who we really are, little by little, without the world giving us a bias. However long it may last, we have had what I consider to be a true friendship. And that, my friend, is the beauty of a new friendship. I'm so glad to have had one with you.
