Dear Baby Sister,
It’s so hard for me to believe that you are even old enough to be going away to school let alone that we are at the day of your departure. It breaks my heart and puts a smile on my face all at the same time to think of you leaving home. You’re leaving to begin a new journey in just a few days and I have so many things I want to say to you that I don’t even know where to begin.
Firstly, always remember to check in and let us know how things are going. After all, we are now living vicariously through you and your new adventures. Also, never forget to call Mom back. She’ll assume the worst and call the other three of us to see who talked to you last and a full blown investigation will begin. Trust me, it’ll turn into a whole thing.
Secondly, don’t let the stress of it all overwhelm you. There will be a lot of pressure and a lot of new stressors that you have yet to have to face, but know that it will be okay. Has something come up that you don’t know how to handle? Call one of us! I can assure you one of your crazy siblings has been through a similar situation or at least could give some input on how to best handle it.
Thirdly, as I touched on above, always know you can call me for anything. I don’t care if it’s two am and you’re at a frat party. Call me! You need someone to talk to? You want someone to share in a new exciting moment with? Call me! Honestly, a phone call from you while you have thousands of other things to do and people to talk to, would mean the world to me.
Fourthly, have so much fun! I know it will be a whole new environment with all new people, but don’t let that hold you back. Make sure to step out of your comfort zone and do things you have never done before. When you feel like you an outsider, keep in mind that everyone else there is in the same boat that you are. So you’re not alone!
Lastly, know how proud we are of you and how much we love you. I can often be heard bragging around my office about my smart little sister who is on her way to do great things. Our family has always been incredibly close and I can assure you adding a few extra miles between us will make no difference. No matter how tough things get, know that we are all so incredibly proud of the woman you have grown into. We can’t wait to see what all you will accomplish next!
Love,
Your (favorite) big sister
