Being young and overbooked with classes, work and other stressors in life can often take a toll on your mental health and happiness. Here are 10 ways to take care of yourself when you are feeling overwhelmed and drained.
1. Stop Negative Self-Talk
If there is anyone in this world who should be your number one supporter it's you. Sometimes we can be our biggest bully with the thoughts and things we say to ourselves. Instead of beating yourself up or saying discouraging comments while cram studying, remind yourself how hard you are working and how capable you are.
2. Cherish Needed Alone Time
With each day of the week being jam-packed with classes, studying and constantly being surrounded by peers, its important to take the time to just be alone. You're not a loser for that night of Netflix alone with hot tea, but rather you are taking the time to relax, take care of yourself and most importantly recharge.
3. Be Gentle with Yourself
You are doing the best you can. Even if you got a C on that test you stayed up late studying for or you didn't do so hot on that religion paper, its okay. Be kind to yourself, learn from your mistakes and just know you will do better next time.
4. Hang with the Squad
Just as it is important to take the time to be alone, it is also important to spend time with those who love you when you are feeling down. Have a movie night with your best friends or if you are too busy with studying, make sure to grab lunch during the day in order to keep your mind clear and your heart happy.
5. Treat Yo'self
After a long, crazy week filled with papers and studying for finals, take the time to treat yourself to something you love. Go to your favorite coffee shop or your favorite local spot for some much needed pizza with friends. Reward yourself with a trip to the mall and pick out a new outfit. Most importantly, acknowledge that you have worked hard and deserve a treat.
6. Music
Music truly makes everything better. When you feel drained from all of the craziness in life, take the time to sit and just listen to your favorite songs or artists. Listen to new artists and ask your friends who they listen to in order to expand your Spotify playlist horizons. I would recommend the amazing Bon Iver whenever you need relaxing, soothing music to revive you.
7. Call the Fam
The great thing about family is they are always there for you. When you are feeling down or overwhelmed, call your mom or FaceTime your siblings. Asking questions and hearing about what is going on in their lives will help to connect you with those who love you, and take your mind off the stress going on in your life.
8. Take Care of Your Body
Taking care of your body can be just as important as taking care of your mind when you are upset or stressed. Your body is all interconnected, so eating healthy and getting in that gym sesh will make you feel better all around. Exercise also helps alleviates stress and promotes eustress (good stress) to help clear your mind.
9. Make Someone's Day
Oftentimes, the best way to make yourself feel better is to brighten someone else's day. Help your friend study for a subject they are struggling with or spend a couple of hours volunteering at an elderly home. Regardless of whom you help, seeing them smile will make there day and brighten your mood.
10. It's All About Perspective
Keep in mind that you are young and life is long. Your stress is temporary and what you are facing now is important, but will it matter in five or 10 years? Focus on the positive, yourself and those who love you.
