To Haiti In The Wake Of Hurricane Matthew

I'm sorry for everything you've been through.

To Haiti In The Wake Of Hurricane Matthew
CNN

I am sorry that not many people know about what is happening to you. You’ve been hit by the brutal Hurricane Matthew, yet not many people talked about it or covered it in social media. It’s not like when Paris was attacked by terrorists, where everyone, including myself, posted statuses, shared articles about it and changed their profile pictures in solidarity for her. I’m sorry that barely anyone prayed for you or paid attention to you. Both tragedies are inevitable, but one more than the other. Natural disasters are painful. Sometimes, it makes you think “why is this happening?”

I remember the earthquake years ago. Now there is flooding, destruction of houses and the dirty river flowing in the streets and inside homes – ruining farms and livestock. I’m so sorry.

I saw images where your kids are evacuating and walking in brown, grimy and disgusting water that’s about shoulder high. I saw images where tin roofs are blown away. I saw images of your people trying to rescue their friends, families and loved ones. If you look at the images deeper, you can see the gloomy, worried and scared faces. It’s heartbreaking to see what's happening to this world.

I am most especially sorry for everything and everyone you lost. I heard the strength of the wind was so strong that even hospitals, schools and police stations were damaged. I will tell my friends and family to pray for you.

I am sorry you are unnoticed, you are ignored and you are not cared for. I am sorry for the hundreds and hundreds of people who fought this battle, yet did not survive.

It is as if terrorist attacks were not enough to show us how terrible we are; natural disasters came to play as well. It is mind-boggling how much people were affected. This catastrophe changed their lives. Everything you and they have worked for.

Climate change is getting worse day by day, and what's even worse is that there are people who support a ridiculous man's belief of climate change being a hoax - that we should fear nuclear weapons and not climate change.

Look at what happened to you. It is completely heartbreaking to know how much you have lost in a span of a day, yet not many people are aware that a part of the world's population has been erased. It's a disaster, yet the wealthy continue on with their lives without using the power and ability that they have to help restore you.

Like every other country in this sad, happy world that we live in, you are important. You are essential. You are meant to be noticed, meant to be cared for and meant to be loved.

I care for you.

Sincerely,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
