When I chose my major as I was applying for college, I did not really know what I wanted to do. The major I chose, journalism, is not even offered at all colleges, so if I had gone somewhere else without the major, my major would be completely different altogether. I picked journalism because I was considering it as my future occupation. I love to write, and I was also considering majoring in writing, another major not offered at every school. Apparently our communications school is hard to transfer into and if I didn’t pick journalism right away and wanted to switch into it later, it would have been hard, so I went with journalism.
I really enjoy journalism and I write for the school paper’s sports section, but I feel like I don’t love journalism as much as other people who are majoring in it. I also don’t know if I want to be a journalist in the future. Therefore, I have considered changing my major. The only problem is, I’m not sure what exactly I want to do, so I don’t know what major I would switch to if I were to do it.
First, I considered double majoring and I looked at the list of majors to see if I would want to dual up in anything. I became interested in therapeutic recreation and decided to look into it. I realized that it would be virtually impossible to major in both, so I thought about switching journalism to a minor and changing majors. I even volunteered with a program over the summer that was similar to therapeutic recreation, working with kids that have high functioning autism. I helped them with art projects and went to fitness classes with them. While I enjoyed it just fine, I wasn’t so sure I wanted to do something like that either. I found myself back at square one. I thought back to the writing major again and wondered if I would like that better than journalism, then thinking back again I thought that the majors would be similar and that I would get the same job regardless.
After all of this I still have the same major and I don’t know if I’m going to switch it. And if I do switch, what would my major be? At the end of the day, there are numerous things you can do with a degree, so I plan on just going with the flow and seeing where my life takes me. I try to always remind myself that I will figure my life out at some point and I don’t necessarily have to do it as a sophomore in college. I will also have a minor or minors I have yet to declare that will give me further options. I’m confident that I will find a job that I love one day, whatever it may be.
