Something that I struggle with is my body image. I don’t say that to draw pity or affirmation in any shape or form; it is simply the honest reality.
My thighs are too big.
My nose is too big.
I have the weirdest, most obnoxious laugh ever.
If you’ve seen the part in "Mean Girls" where the girls are all talking about the parts of their bodies they hate—that’s what is like in my head quite often.
I’m a huge Amy Poehler fan, and in her book, "Yes, Please," she explained her personal struggle with herself. She likened her dislike of her body to a demn who would stay in the closet until the right time. Then it would pop out and make her see all those things that aren’t great about her.
The whole time I was reading this part of her book I was nodding my head so hard I got whiplash.
That, however, is a story for a different day.
The point is that body image is something that we all struggle with. We go into this game of comparison with others who have a six pack or smokin’ hot legs.
However, I think that things would change a lot if we looked into the mirror and saw us how Jesus sees us. How amazing would that be? How cool would it be for me to look in the mirror and see all of those things that I love, rather than those things I hate?
Well, I’m about to drop some truth on you: God says you’re fearfully and wonderfully made. He loves you so much and thinks you're so incredible that He sent His Son to die for you.
God formed you. He took His time on you. He knit you together with care and with love.
If that doesn’t give you a different outlook on things, I don’t know what will.
To complain about your body, to wish that you had another’s, is to tell God that His creation is less than and not good enough.
How would you feel if you were to take painstaking efforts to make something, only for someone to say that it simply wasn’t enough?
We don’t understand the reasons why God made us a certain way, but the beautiful thing is that He has a reason for everything. He makes no mistakes. Ever. And to pick apart His creation is to completely negate the idea that what He makes is beautiful.
Those same hands that formed every beautiful sunset, gave puppies puppy breath, and created the ocean crafted you too.
I’m not perfect, but my Creator is. Therefore, I know that He made me with love, compassion, and with a purpose.
The moment that we start seeing ourselves as this, it would completely change everything we think and know about ourselves.
So, the next time that anti self-love demon shows up, round kick him right in the kisser by remembering that you are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made.
And to be made in God's image is an inexplicably beautiful thing.
"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well." -Psalm 139:14
