Dear friend,
I know you are sad. I know you may feel like you're the only one who doesn't have it together. I know that from your perspective, it seems that everyone else is so happy. Everyone seems to have the perfect boyfriend or girlfriend, a great job or more friends than you. I know you feel like you're drowning and like everything is just one big mess. I know that a part of you believes the universe is out to get you because things aren't going your way. But let me tell you something: of all the things I just listed, there is one thing I want you to make sure you understand. I know you're hurting and feel like no one notices. I want you to know that I notice. I notice how you try to cover up sadness with humor. I notice how you cry and lie about the reasoning. I notice how your tone has changed, like the weight of the world has pressed down on you so hard that it has taken over your whole being. I notice how you stare off into space and claim it's just daydreaming. I notice.
Lots of times we believe that it is wrong to be sad. We think that being sad will only bring everything down or that it will just bring everyone else down. However, it is exactly the opposite. In order to be happy, sometimes you have to be a little sad. In the movie Inside Out, Joy realizes in the end, after pushing Sadness away for the entire movie, that you need sadness to bring peace. In order for us to recognize happiness, we have to have recognized sadness too. It can't be sunny all the time.
Sadness does not make you weak, if anything it makes you stronger for recognizing that you are a human with emotions. So next time you feel down in the dumps and feel like nobody seems to notice, take that feeling with a grain of salt. There is always someone who notices. Maybe they are afraid to acknowledge it because they don't want to come off as nosy. Regardless, someone is on your side.
Take the time today to show someone you noticed or go tell someone that you're feeling a little down. It is perfectly normal to not feel okay, and I guarantee someone has noticed.
