There are a few factors why I decided to pick the major of Political Science. I want to further my knowledge of the political field. Also, my end goal is to eventually go to law school.
Issues which plagued my generation has always been something I have been curious about. I would like to believe people really do know the difference between right and wrong. However, people feel the need to succumb to what society accepts as common behavior. Every day, I see and hear the disregard for people who belong to a minority. Humans tend to form judgments about each other before they really get to know the person. I am not perfect and I have done the same as well. It is easier to pass judgment than to get to know someone. I do not understand people who hate one another over matters like, race, gender, or sexuality. None of this really matters because we are all humans at the end of the day. We are more alike than different, we share the same blood, skeletal structure, and much more. This very thinking of feeling superior to one another has led to major oppression and wars.
I feel very passionate about changing our societies’ warped thinking about minorities. Thus, I wished to pursue Political Science. I want to do something about the evils of society.
After graduating I want to do something important with my degree.
I yearn to work as a defensive lawyer for minorities by engaging with certain associations which preach equality for all. I hope to work for organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Thus, the major of Political Science will give me the tools to succeed in my dreams. Both the ACLU and NAACP’s mission statements coincide with my core values of tolerance, liberty, and optimism. Being an opened-minded individual in society is important to me because it allows others to explore new ideas. Freedom for all is crucial for a progressive and thriving society. Optimism in the hope of a new tomorrow will better the future. I will not be content until justice is served for everyone.
The best part of Political Science is there are many fields that people can go into afterward. Not to state the obvious, but anything in the political spectrum aka lobbyist, governor or local leader.
Over just the course of one year at SDSU has made me realize what an enjoyable major poli sci is. There are not many math or science courses involved which is a plus for me. For all the undecided majors out there I would highly recommend looking at Poli Sci. Especially, because we are living in such an ultra-critical time of politics.
