Dear College Freshmen,

You are all about to head into your sophomore year of college. It has either been amazing and has gone by so fast, or it has been so awful and has been agonizingly slow. You either found out your dream job and know what you want to major in, or you still have no idea and are just going along with it all. No matter your situation, here are a few words from an older, somewhat more experienced, student.

1. It goes by so fast

Believe it or not, your sophomore year goes by so fast because you are so busy. But guess what, each year time flies by faster and faster and faster! So take advantage every moment you have whether it's going out with friends, studying your butt off for a final that isn't even in your major, or going for a walk around your campus, because before you know it, it will all be gone.

2. It's okay that you still don't know what you want to do

Trust me you still have time! If you don't know what you want to do, your sophomore year is the year to really figure it out. What are your passions? What do you love to do? Have any required courses that you have taken really appealed to you? You may not have all the answers just yet but soon you will, and once you will, it is amazing! Ask yourself the question, does what I want to pursue feel like work? If it does, then it may not be the right major for you, but if the answer is no, then keep working hard you're on the right track.

3. Open up your horizons

Did you find what you wanted to major in? Are you super excited? Think you have it all figured out? Well guess not, you most likely don't, and that's okay! When I found out I wanted to pursue journalism, I never expected to add another major and a minor, and I never knew that I liked videography, broadcasting, and photography. Keep your mind open to all the horizons because more opportunities are coming your way!

4. It gets easier

Freshman year is usually the hardest year to adjust to. Not being home, roommates, hours of homework, different athletic teammates, strict professors, etc. It's so hard to settle down the first year but trust me when I say, don't give up because it gets so much better. You know what's going on, you know where everything is, you're figuring out your passions, you learn who your true friends are, so overall the second year is so much easier.

5. Be yourself

Embrace every moment, keep your options open, and have fun! This is your chance to learn so much about yourself so be you. Meet new people. Get more involved on campus this year and have fun!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
