Now I don't know about all of you, but my location this summer has been a bruttle one temperature wise. Thanks to the humidity and scarceness of storms in a given month, some days have hit 100°+ in how they felt.
To emphasize my reasoning on bringing up such a common sense realization with it being summer and all, is due to my job. I am a lifeguard and work a minimum of 40 hours a week battling the sun, sunburn and sweat.
I know 40 hours a week is petty change for some and that's not what I am complaining about. I in fact, love having something to do more times and a week than not; and money is money, am I right?
Anyways, I want to help others survive the summer heat with tips I've learned from trial and error or pure necessity...
1. Hydrate
Obvious I know, but sometimes we forget to drink water. Also, hydration is more than having an occasional sip of water. You should have the equivalent of 8-16oz glasses of water a day as a minimum. If you are going to be in the sun for an extended period of time you should plan on drinking much more.
2. Sleep
Oddly enough sleep can play a part in surviving the sun. Simply put, you want your body to feel well rested and ready for the day. Sleep is what allows your body to restart and prepare for what's next. If you don't get enough sleep and spend countless hours in the sun, you will begin to feel more and more drained. Your energy level with decrease overtime and no one wants that.
3. Sunblock (other protection)
Another obvious one, but again many choose to opt out of applying sunscreen. Also, if you come into contact with any type of water you need to reapply after a certain time. Even if you stay dry the whole day it maybe smart to reapply. Back to the water, apply the sunblock and allow yourself time for it to soak in.
Other types of protection are sunglasses, hats, umbrellas to name a few. Pick one or them all!
4. Knowledge
By this I mean be aware of the weather before heading out for the day. You want to be able to dress appropriately, pack enough water and your sources of sun protection. You need to be able to have a plan for whatever you are doing that day and knowing the weather is the knowledge that will help.
5. Fan
If your job or plans for the day allow it, have air conditioning or a fan close by for a constant cool breeze. Even if you have the breeze during breaks or a short amount of time, they can help your body cool off and alleviate some of the heat.
6. Find Your Happy Place
When all else fails find your happy place and good luck in the sun!
