Tips To Help The Undecided, Decide On A Major

Not knowing what to major in as a junior in college is a terrifying thing. I’ve been through Art Education, Creative Writing, Kinesiology, and Advertising in my two short years of college. Going home for the holidays and being asked what I’m majoring in over and over again causes a lot of stress for me because I’m still not 100 percent sure. Although I’m no expert, I’ve made a list of ways that will hopefully make it a little easier to decide on a major when the time comes.

Choose something you love to do.

Although this sounds obvious, many people choose their major based on what kind of money it’ll bring in. If you love to write, great! Become a writer. If it’s something you love, you’ll find a way to make your salary work.

Don't base it off of money.

Going off of my last point, if you absolutely hate anything having to do with engineering, steer clear of engineering majors. Just because it brings in a good chunk of change does not mean you should major in it. I would hate having to wake up every morning to go to a job I dislike.

Dabble.

During your first year of college, dabble in a few different areas of interest. This way, you get a better understanding of what you do and don’t like. It’ll help you narrow down your choices later on.

Talk to people in the profession you're considering.

Don’t be afraid to job shadow someone for a day. Maybe the idea of becoming an orthodontist is great, but once you get to see all the work that goes on behind the scenes you’ll change your mind.

Consider requirements for majors of interest.

If you need to get out of school in four years, make sure that whatever major you choose allows you to do so. If time isn’t an issue, then consider the money aspect of staying in school longer.

Don't settle.

If you choose a major but still aren’t sure if it’s the right one for you, don’t lock anything in. Talk to someone before you make a final decision. Going back to point two, you don’t want to find yourself working at a job you don’t like 10 years from now.

Make appointments with advisors!

I cannot stress this enough. Take advantage of everything your college has to offer and talk to advisors. I once had five meetings in one day with five different departments because I had no clue what I wanted to do. Advisors are there to help you. Trust me, they can explain things a lot more clearly than if you are researching everything by yourself online.

Good luck and happy major hunting!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
