Before I got to college, teachers and former college students would tell me all these weird and nerve wrecking things about their college experience that seemed a little far fetch to me. Here are a few myths that I found to be true or false.
The number one college myth I was told is that professors will look at you like you're a name on a piece of paper and that they won't care about my grade; this depends on the professor and the school. From what I experienced, my professors cared about my grade because I cared about my grade. Now, if you attend a school with 15,000 plus students then you may have a harder time getting to know your professors, however, if you need to talk to them you can and if you make a pleading case then they will more than likely work with you. This will not hold true for all professors because everyone has at least one that could honestly care less. Also, asking for extra credit it never a bad thing because it shows you will take extra precautions to make sure you learn the material and want a good grade of course. If your professor throws out some free extra credit points take them because you never know when you will need them and for me personally extra credit was the difference in my grade being a B to an A.
Lastly you have the myth that all college students do is study; that can be very true and can be very false depending on the student. I found increasing my student time from about eight hours a week to twelve hours helped my grades tremendously and soon as I decided to slack off on studying my test scores were not as high. When I talked to other students about their study habits three out of six students who made really good grades like all A's and B's would spend at least ten plus hours studying a week. Now, you have students like my first year roommate that made all A's and watched Netflix way more than she studied; those students are extremely lucky. You don't have to come into college with a set number of hours you study because once you get there you will probably have to make time for other events.. Take those first couple of week and decide on a study plan that is right for you. Also, you may have to change up your study plan a couple of times, that's okay, you will eventually find what works for you.
Just to clear up any confusion, these myths could turn about to be the opposite of what I said for anyone because everyone experiences different things during this process. What is true for everyone is you can make your experience go anyway you want. If you want to take risk, take them. If you want to go hog wild then do it, well maybe just a little. College allows you to be your own person, so enjoy it. Look out for more tips!
