You have your spring break all planned out; you've found an affordable spring break spot, your outfits for that week are all bomb and your swimsuits have just arrived in the mail. But have you sat down with your girls to make a plan in case something goes wrong?

Spring break is all about having fun, but the goal is to unwind for a week then come back and finish out the semester strong. Knowing how to stay safe during spring break is just as important as planning your spring break, and there are a few spring break safety tips that you need to know to ensure you make it home safely.

1. Stick together.

If you are going to a popular spring break spot where there will be a lot of college kids, then you should also know that there will be a lot of creepy people as well. If you and your girls will be out drinking, be sure to watch out for each other and stick together. Don't leave a party with a stranger, stick to the girl code "we come together, we leave together," in a big crowd, try not to separate yourself from your friends and never go to anyone's hotel room alone.

2. Practice safe drinking.

Party smart and be responsible. Know your limit; if you know you are a light weight do not overdo it. Nobody wants to babysit their drunk friend; that wouldn't do anything but ruin everybody's night. Always keep an eye on your drink. Take your drink with you everywhere you go; if you have to go to the bathroom, take it with you because roofies are real and it can happen to you. Here are a few ways to track how many drinks you have had.

3. Be careful at ATM's.

This is not something many people think about, but you need to be sure to be careful at ATM's, especially in a foreign city. Go to the ATM with a friend or in a group and be sure to look around, making sure no one is hanging out where they shouldn't.

4. Hooking up.

Hooking up during spring break is something that happens, and there is nothing wrong with it. If you see a nice looking guy and you want sex, go for it, but be smart about it. Have safe sex; STD's/STI's are real. Remember that alcohol and drugs can affect your decision making. You should also know that if you are laying completely naked next to a guy, and you change your mind and say no, then he should respect that. No matter the situation, NO means NO.

5. Stay connected.

I know you're out of town on vacation but make sure you keep in touch with the people at home who care about you. Keep your phone charged, give someone at home your hotel information and if you are going out the country, remember that 9-1-1 is not always available and to learn the local emergency number.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
