We all know how it feels like to cram for a test, do really bad on a test, or both. Maybe not all of us, but I have for sure. I have finally figured out how to properly study for a test. Here are some tips that I have discovered that have helped me and my grades:
1. Review your first test
Looking back on your test you now understand how the teacher teaches and what to focus on for the next test.
2. Pay attention in class
Pretty basic right? If your teacher has a bunch of information on the slide shows, focus on the stuff the teacher is actually going over. So when it comes down to studying you know what to go over and what not to go over.
3. Find a study spot
Be it the library, outside, or your kitchen table. A spot that you are able to focus on and will not get distracted by others.
4. Get all your resources together
Your notes, book, slideshows or wherever you get the information from that is going to on your test. Compare what you took from your notes and see what the book says about it.
5. Choose your materials
Notecards and pens are typically used to study. You may want to choose different colors that help you focus. For example: I use yellow notecards because it is easier for me to read. I have heard for people who are dyslexic that it is easier for them to read on pink paper. Also I like to use pens with purple ink because I think it stands out on paper rather than black ink. So something to consider researching about and see what is best for you.
6. Organize your time
Planners are your best friends, use them! That test that just so happen to pop up on you was probably on your syllabus. You could have known about it if you put it on your planner.
7. Give yourself time
You know what your school life schedule is like, but you have yoga and other activities to get to. Sometimes it is best to cancel your extra plans. Your education is first. You did not go to college just to be involve with clubs or your friends, but to get an education. Make sure you have plenty of time to study. Even if your test is not for another week, it is better to be ahead.
8. Ask for help
Go use the resources that your school offers! Most schools have learning resource centers where you can go get your paper or homework checked on. Also maybe ask someone in class if they would like to study with you. I am sure they would be willing to help you if you are stuck on something. If you go to a smaller school, professors have office hours and are usually willing to help you as well.
9. Make a study test
There are plenty of websites, like quizlet, that you can make your own tests on. Especially if your test is mostly definitions that is a great way to practice.
10. Keep hydrated and eat
A lot of people that are stressed out forget to eat and keep healthy. If you know you are going to be in the library for a while you should bring snacks and water.
11. Breathe and relax
At the end of the day, everything will be fine. This test is not life or death. You can do it and everything will work out.
