Tips For Graduating Seniors

As your senior year comes to a close, you are probably beginning to wonder what the next four years have in store for you. You have found the dorm you are going to live in and you are probably texting your future froomie daily. You have picked out decor for your humble abode, and you are getting ready for orientation. But wait, slow down! This could be your last summer of freedom. The only one not filled with an overwhelming internship or heavy load of summer classes. This very well could be the last summer you spend with some of your high school best friends. As the chapter of senior year closes and the new one of college is about to begin, make sure you have the greatest summer of your life!

Here are a few things you need to do to secure a perfect senior summer!

1. Spend time with your family

You are used to coming home every day to your brother or sister sitting on the couch watching TV. You are used to your parents cooking you dinner and filling up your gas tank. Once you move to college all of this changes. For example, the likelihood of you ever living in the same house as your siblings again is a very slim one. So take in the early morning wake ups for errands from mom and the unexpected pranks from your little brother. You are going to miss them!

2. Go on a road trip

Take the opportunity this summer is giving you and use it to go somewhere new with your best friends. Go see the Grand Canyon or go get yourself a nice tan at the beach! No matter where you decide to go make sure you do it with your best friends!

3. Get a summer job

Many high schoolers have never had the experience of having a job. This summer is the perfect time to change that. With the necessary means of needing to build your resume along with the need of previous work experience for many jobs you will want while you're in college. This summer is the perfect time to put on that bikini and lifeguard or tie on the apron to work at the cookie store in the mall!

4. Do something unexpected

I'm not saying you need to go out and break a law, but I am saying it might be time to come out of your shell. Mark something off of your bucket list or do something you never thought you could do. Climb something tall if you are afraid of heights, swim even if you're afraid of the water. Prove to yourself that you can overcome things because once in college you'll see just how helpful that mindset is.

5. Make it the best one yet

Spend time with those you love most and go on crazy adventures, but most of all take it all in. Because your first year of college with truly show you who you are and who you want to be in the future. You will grow and mature, and things will be very different next summer. You will have new friends and your best friends will have new friends. Things, to put it simply, will just be different. So take it all in and make it a summer you'll never forget!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
