I am the definition of a clumsy and awkward human being. I'm the girl who can't walk in a straight line. I'm the girl who walks into a tree and apologizes (at least I'm polite about it). I'm the girl who trips over every crack in the sidewalk and bumps into other people and inanimate objects ever time I walk.
I am the girl who jumps up and down in Zumba classes because I can't follow the instructor.
But no more! I've solved the problem and now, I tear up the dance floor when I go out -- not really, but at least I feel more confident. Here's how you can do the same:
You'll Need:
1. YouTube
2. Patient roommates, preferably the kind who appreciate your awkward clumsiness and find it endearing
3. Some favorite jams
4. Enough room to rock out
5. Your dancing shoes and probably gym clothes
Steps:
1. Warn your roommates that things might get ugly for the next 40 minutes. The way I see it, you have four options (I personally choose D).
a. Make them promise not to put you on their snap story.
b. Ask them to join you -- especially if they're also clumsy and awkward, so at least it's not just you when your other roommates walk in.
c. Wait until they leave.
d. OWN that awkwardness and dance like nobody is watching.
2. Pick a song or even a playlist. For the sake of this article, let's choose “Sorry” by Justin Bieber.
3. Go on YouTube and type in "Dance to ‘Sorry’ by Justin Bieber" or something along these lines, and a bunch of videos will come up.
a. Some will just be people rocking out, while others will walk you through a tutorial.
b. Go with a tutorial.
4. Learn the dance and practice it.
5. Now pick a new song and repeat steps three and four.
6. Do steps 3-5 a few times a week. It helps if you do the same three or four songs for a week or two because you create muscle memory and get smoother at doing the routine.
7. Eventually you'll become confident in yourself, and you'll be rocking out all over the living room
8. So, with your newfound confidence, bring on the booze and the cute shoes and rock out at the next frat party, club, or bar!
You can catch me groovin' at Indigo on Thursdays with my new moves!
Side note: I was born into a family of dancers (at least the women are). Unfortunately, I did not get my mother’s dancing genes, and I am one of the clumsiest people alive. I love to dance at parties, so I figured I should probably try to learn some moves. I am a work out fanatic and after doing Shaun T’s Hip Hop Abs and CIZE routines, I started looking on YouTube. It’s a fun and different work out, and helps me burn up the calories without having to go to Zumba and embarrass myself. Plus it entertains the hell out of my roommates, and who am I to deny them that privilege?
