With a new year in full swing, everyone in in search of the latest diet or workout regimen. But, often people forget that New Year's resolutions entail more than just losing weight or eating better. I admire any resolution, as I think it is great to always strive for improvement, regardless of what that means to you. As I think losing weight and eating healthy can be beneficial for most some, I think the most impactful resolutions start with small changes that ultimately lead you to a healthier and happier lifestyle. Here's to a great New Year! Here are a few small changes you can make this year to welcome a happier and healthier year:
1. Surround yourself with people who build you up.
There's no denying that the people you surround yourself with have an impact on you. If you surround yourself with people who tear you down and are consistently negative, you will surely find yourself acquiring the same negative mindset. This new year, challenge yourself by only surrounding yourself with people who help you become a better you, people who empower you and support you. Most importantly, don't forget to thank those who support you, show them how much you appreciate them.
2. Get active!
When I say "get active" I don't just mean "go to the gym". In my terms, "get active" means to get up and do something! When you find yourself reeling for change, get up and try something new, this may entail working out but it may simply mean getting out and trying something new! Go for a hike, try yoga, go explore local parks, anything! Just get up and get out there, thats the hardest part!
3. Try something new.
This goes hand and hand with getting active. We all have a few things in the back of our head that we've always wanted to try, but haven't, for a multitude of reasons. The new year is a great time to test our new interests and learn new things. Don't be afraid of change, pursue what interests you, there's a reason you're interested in it!
4. Test yourself.
One question I heard recently that really resonated with me, is how do we know our true beliefs if we never challenge them? However, that is not to say your innate beliefs are invalid. To me this means, don't be afraid to consider other people's opinions as well. You don't always have to agree with someone, but to be able to listen and understand is immensely valuable. Have your beliefs, but don't be afraid to listen to others as well.
5. Listen to yourself.
Don't forget to listen to what your body and your mind are telling you. Too often, we make plans for ourselves without considering if our body is too tired or if our mind is hesitant. Trust your gut feelings, if you don't want to agree to something, or you have a bad feeling, you don't have to do whatever it is that is making you feel badly. As far as from a health perspective, when you're hungry eat, when you're tired, rest, when you need a break, take a break. Don't push yourself, your body is telling you what it needs. Stay in tune with what your body and mind are telling you!
