Want to become a better cook, but don't know where to start? Maybe you're fresh out of college, and your culinary skills up until now only extend to coffee pot ramen and instant oatmeal. Or maybe you've always dreamed of being a chef, but your day job has you feeling too beat to cook by the time you get home.

Whatever the case, there's still hope. Cooking doesn't have to be a challenge. Here a five easy tips for beginner chefs. You'll be hosting dinner parties before you know it!

Rinse rice before cooking

Rice is an easy staple food to make, and the possibilities when it comes to seasonings and pairings are endless. But no matter what you do with it: always remember to rinse your rice at least once before cooking to remove excess starch and debris.

Invest in a quality chef's knife

It's easy to think any old knife will do when cooking, especially when it comes to softer foods like vegetables. But for safety and efficiency in the kitchen, you can't beat a high quality chef's knife.

Another simple hack to elevate a staple food: put salt in your pasta water as its boiling. It'll season your noodles from the inside out!

Dry meat before searing it

Nothing beats the taste of a perfectly seared salmon filet or steak. In order to get the right amount of sear, pat your meat with a clean paper towel before putting it in the pan to absorb excess moisture.
