"If traveling were free you would never see me again." Many of us have heard this quote and wish it were true. However, we have all been made to believe by society, our parents, adults, capitalists, that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and in this case, a free plane ticket. Yet in the crevices and alcoves of life, there exist these "free rides" (although perhaps not in such fancy cars).
Well, not completely, and not in every case. For those traveling with a little less in their pockets, one stratagem has been to take a flight "off season". There really is no absolute winner here unfortunately. If you do secure a cheap ticket to Barcelona in January when it can be as cold as 40 degrees Fahrenheit, who is the real winner? This climate compromise travelers make when deciding to book their flight or train ride is subjective, and should be considered with caution and after having done the research. One of the biggest letdowns of traveling somewhere would be the incongruity of one's imagination and perception and vague knowledge of the weather of their destination and the reality of the changing climate when already landing with nothing but short sleeve shirts and shorts in their suitcase.
Then there are the "tricks" and "tips" for aspiring adventure seekers who want to see the wonders of the world but may not have some or all of the required expenses. Do not fret my fellow hodophiliacs because there are more ways to travel then many of us can readily guess.
There is the option to raise the money. After double checking your mom's address book for any rich relatives you don't quite remember but are ready to rediscover all over again, you can sell yourself. Not that way. Online. Not that way either. There have been rapid increases in crowdfunding sites like gofundme.com that allow funding for practically anything. If Ivory can ask the public for help getting "a bottle of Henny" (http://bossip.com/1113775/get-a-job-funniest-crazi...), then you can certainly set up an account on one of these sites, pleading to the people for donations for your trip to New Zealand. The pro-tip here is that you can expect more success if your trip involves charity work or some other altruistic purpose (although is there anything more sacred than seeing the landscape from the Lord of The Rings movies?).
So if you don't feel comfortable selling yourself online but still want to be shown a whole new world, shinning, shimmering, splendid...then you still have some really cool options!
If you are in school for an undergraduate program (a higher degree like a masters or PhD will have likelier chances) then you have the amazing opportunity to travel for free. Yes, free, or at least have partial expenses covered. Internships and co-ops are trending more right now than Trump University along with the several hundred other cases against the baby-sized-fingered presidential candidate. If you are a student and don't have plans for the summer, apply to as many of these abroad programs as you can find. Speaking from personal experience, I know of at least three friends off the top of my head who have taken these amazing opportunities. One is working in Japan right now, another will be in Chile at a startup for the summer, and the third is also already working in Singapore. After silently raging at myself for not exploring these options, I congratulated all of my friends and made a mental note (stapled to my hippo-campus or whatever part stores longish-term memory) to explore this option next summer.
*Are you still here (in my Ferris impression)?* Well if you have made it down this far and still aren't satisfied then there is one last resource you may be able and willing to tap into. It is closer to the extreme end of the spectrum and involves selling yourself and your services. Still, not like that. The Peace Corps offers a plethora of travel opportunities where you can stay much longer in any one area than most people can afford to stay. Unless you were dying to go to Antarctica then the Peace Corps will be able to accommodate your wish to travel to practically anywhere in South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia. The reason this is more extreme is that you make a contract with one of the scariest organizations in the world, the U.S. government. You also work and provide aid to the people of the area where you choose to travel. There is high risk, high reward if you take this red pill. Someday I may chase the rabbit and see how far the hole goes.
