Let’s take, on average, all the segments of our lives and take them out in portions. From the video “One Colorful Life” we can consider statistics that will give you a glimpse of the time you truly have. On average, if we live to be about 80 years old, we will spend about 5 years of our eating, another 4 years of your life will be spent studying and pursuing your education. Another 2 and a half years will easily be spent commuting whether it be being in traffic, on a bus, or just going from point A to point B. Just a hair over 11 years of your life will go into your job, whether that be working in a cubicle, or making a difference in someone’s life.
As you read this article online, it adds a good 10 minutes to the 6 years of your life you will spend surfing the web, researching, shopping, or watching youtube videos. That party you went to for that you spent 6 minutes or 60 to get ready for, will account for the 1 year on average you will spend getting ready for the day ahead or the event of the day you go to. A good chunk of 11 years will be spent on average watching your favorite tv show, the championship game, or the rerun of your favorite movie. That becomes 12 when you realize that Netflix will be the end of you. Waiting in line will account for 6 months of your entire life; standing for that Black Friday sale, that movie preview, or in line at the restaurant. If you can’t hang out with your best friend without your cell phone in your hand, that’s just minutes that will account for the 4 years, yes years, you will spend on your phone, ignoring the rest of the beautiful world and people passing around you.
Complaining about the exam, dwelling about trivial drama, and whining about not having something you probably don’t need will probably take away 5 months from your valuable existence. Now, you’re probably content that you still have 34.5 years left to actually live. I’m sorry, because as ideal as that would be, you forget one thing, about 26 years of your life will erode away sleeping.
Now, you have about 8 and a half years left. That time is all you have to tell the girl of your dreams you love her, to show mom and dad that they were right, to hold his hand as tight as you can, to drink to a beautiful life, to hold your daughter in your hands, and to let go of your son’s hands when he leaves with his own son. That’s all the time you have to laugh, to smile, to love, to breath a while, to kiss, to hold, to travel, to be bold. It’s the time you have to dance until you can’t and to run until you pant. Life and living aren’t hand and hand, because of your life, you only truly get to live for 10% of it. So I urge you to do so, to not take anyone or anything for granted, because 90% of it will be full of 100% regret if you don’t.
