Time's Up

Musings of time and what it means.

Time's Up

This semester has got me thinkin' -

about time.

And how much of it I seem to waste, how much time I have left until Thanksgiving break, how many more days I have until a paper is due that I haven't even started yet.

Lately, I've been really busy, with 18 units I spend most of my time doing homework, and of that time allotted it still isn't enough to get everything done. Oh if there were just more hours in the day.

Well, what is time? Why does it define so much of our lives? 'Our' being, us humans.

If you type "time" into Google, you will first get the literal time of day, then "time definition" will get you this.

"The indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present, and future regarded as a whole." -noun

and

"Measure the time taken by (a process or activity, or a person doing it)." -verb

Okay. I guess I can get behind that first definition, but ever since I've learned how to think for myself I've come to the conclusion that time is man-made, and everything that is going to happen already has. A construct of human perception, if you will. There is no future or past, only the present moment.

"Time is a tool you can put on the wall, or wear it on your wrist."

A video that I often go back to watch over again, is a video in a series of six, with one focused on time. I'll warn it's quite weird, but for me, it's one of those things that is so bizarre you just can't look away.

Do you think it's true what they say? That as you get older the years go by faster and faster?

I do. And this worries me because I am not even that old yet! This year has flown by. It seems it was only a couple of months ago I was still writing "2015" at the tops of my papers. Why must it be this way? Is it because I don't focus enough of my energy on the present moment? Always thinking about what comes next, propelling myself endlessly forward until... until... my time is up.

"If we run out of time, then where does it go? Is time even real does anyone know?"

I think the answer to this would be, if we run out of time we are the ones that will be "going" and then if we are ceasing to exist I guess that also means time and your perception of it would cease to exist as well.

Do I have enough time to get all of the things I want completed? Can I travel the world? Can I make an impact on peoples lives? Do I have enough time to save the world? Who knows. I could be dead tomorrow.

There's a lot more discussion that could go into this concept of time, but all I know is, whether or not I believe if the past is history, the future's a mystery thus today is a gift, or if I believe there is no future or past, just this moment, I still wear a wristwatch, and am constantly guided by it.

If you would like some additional readings on time and it's confusion click here. Or here for Albert Einstein's thoughts on it. (I found this after I wrote my article.)

Also, some good movies to check out that will trip you out (most likely) and make you question time, Donnie Darko, Inception, and Interstellar.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to read this, memento mori.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
