In the midst of shows like "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" and "The Real Housewives of Who Cares What City," it's hard to find role models of substance and quality. Although I will be the first to admit to having watched "Dance Moms" or "Toddlers and Tiaras" in the past, I will also admit that I am ashamed of it. Reality television is filled with Botox-addicted, self-obsessed airheads who fill our heads with fabricated glimpses of what they wish their life was really like.
I hate to burst your bubbles out there—but **spoiler alert**—none of it is real.
While we waste away our days following what mindless thing Kim Kardashian is going to do next, or who is going to be kicked off "Big Brother Season: Please Cancel This Show Already," we are missing the opportunity to support the people that matter. If we are still going to focus on celebrities, we should be supporting people like Amy Poehler or Emma Watson.
We should be supporting those who give positive messages, not pointless messages. Yes, these are celebrities just like those involved in the reality TV business, but they are celebrities with a message. They convey confidence and aim to inspire those around them. And the best part of all is that they use their power and influence to better the world.
Have you read Amy Poehler's book "Yes Please?" It is an amazing, inspiring read that will leave you feeling like you hold the power to conquer the world. Just watching her in any of her many roles on SNL or on "Parks and Recreation," or hosting any awards show, you can see that she lives life her way and doesn't let what others think get to her.
She holds her head high and leads by example. She shows us that taking risks is the only way you will get anywhere worth being. She should be celebrated, not some wannabe who splits her time between the tanning salon, the bar, and the porcelain throne just to get views.
Emma Watson is another perfect example. Since completing the final installment in the "Harry Potter" franchise, she has gone on to complete her college degree from Brown, star in more than a few major motion pictures, and become one of the faces for the HeForShe Movement to achieve gender equality.
She is using her influence and power to encourage equality and make progressive changes, instead of providing us with meaningless chatter. She challenges us to: "If not me, who? If not now, when?"
These are the figures we should spend our time following. Men and women who compel us to take action and strive for a better life.
So the next time you make the decision to support a celebrity, ignore the flashy, trashy attention seekers and go for the more deserving candidate.
