It's summer time, and everyone seems to be at the beach. But not me. I'm working, taking a summer class, and more.
Summer is finally here. Finals are over and school is out. Everyone is at home or better yet, on vacation. This article is more focused on those of you who haven't had the opportunity to take a nice long vacation over the summer. There are many of you, like me, that aren't making any grand trips all over the summer. But what do you do. Many of you right now are likely just hanging out at home, visiting with friends, reading and watching Netflix non stop, and just chilling.
However, there is another option. Or rather, several. Don't get bored, party and chill all summer, and go back to school feeling unproductive. There are some great things you can do this summer that are productive while still having a good time.
First, you could get a job. I'm currently beginning to work essentially full time at a grocery store in the prepared foods department. Many grocery stores, parks, restaurants, and other businesses will be hiring over the summer when they are more busy. This can obviously be great as you will be making money, and likely lots of it if you can get the hours. Finding a job with likeable hours may not be hard either, as long as you are willing to do whatever. Summers are busy, for businesses too. We all know how helpful money will be in the fall once the semester starts. Go online, drive around to businesses, and apply now. While jobs are there, they will fill up, so you have to act fast.
Don't expect to just go around two weeks from now and find a perfect job. You have to go find one. There are also other options with less commitment. Fairs and carnivals and such will be hiring as well,, if they haven't already. This can be a great way to make tons of money without the longer term commitment. Additionally, if you missed out on applying to the hundreds of businesses at the local fair, you can always show up and offer to help close or open for some extra money. I worked at a local fair for years and saw tons of kids earning extra money besides just their jobs helping out after closing or before opening.
Second, you could take a summer class. Deadlines are important here and many have likely been passed. However, summer classes are often split into two sessions, one starting relatively soon at the end of May and one starting in July. Look online for what classes you need to take and see if there is something open. Online classes can be a great way to catch up or get ahead on degree requirements. Additionally, if you are taking it at another college and transferring the credit in, it will likely not matter much what exact grade you get as your college may not accept grades from transfer institutions. If you are in the SUNY system like me, you can take summer classes online or on campus at any of the campuses for the in state rate. Don't miss out on this.
Third, stay busy with things positive for you. One way to do this is by working out. Make a routine to go the gym every day or go for a run. Set goals. Or try to learn a new language using an online app. Or you could even learn how to program or build a website. Now is the time to do that stuff, not during the school year where you will be busy with tons of other stuff. You could also just read books. Make a list and try to go through it.
Overall though, you can still have a good time. Even staying busy you can always take day trips and such.
