Every year when the ball drops and the clock strikes twelve, we always make a new year's resolution. There are many common resolutions like losing a certain amount of weight or pushing for that promotion, but they are almost never achieved. I have made many in the past that I always forget about by the end of January. Resolutions that are monumental and could change someone's life are almost never achieved. We push ourselves to achieve them, but then give up or forget about it soon after making it.
Last year I made a resolution that was a difficult one and I was really hoping to finish. I told myself I would finish the rough draft a book I was wanting to publish and I failed big time. I haven't touched my book in over a year. When I told myself I was going to write, I didn't want to write. I was never in the mood to finish it. That resolution was ridiculous and almost impossible for me to achieve with school, work and the small social life I have. My free time is usually soaked up by Netflix or video games making writing last on the list of fun things to do. I regret making that resolution because now I look back at all the times I could be writing and progressing forward, but instead I was soaking up the excitement and drama of today's media.
Making a resolution can be a good thing. You want to make your resolution achievable by your standards, Making it small is a great way to begin. Maybe you need to repaint your house and you have been needing to do it for years. Make that a resolution. That is a resolution that can always remind you and anyone else who might think your house needs repainted. Projects are simple resolutions that can be achieved quickly or with ease. Changing a part of your personality or maybe a habit you have are difficult resolutions because it requires many skills. Self-discipline and self-awareness are both important for you to achieve that personality goal. Knowing that you are changing or not changing is important. Telling friends and family of your resolution will allow them to help you stay on it in case you ever steer away. Disciplining yourself is crucial for when yo do steer off the path and begin you old habits again.
No matter what resolution you make this year, be sure to remember that its a new year. There are many things to look forward to. 2016 is long gone and we are now waiting to see what 2017 has in store for all of us. Every new year is a clean slate with new things to do and experience. Take it one step at a time and live your life the way you want to. Resolutions are just there to guide you a little. Don't let last year beat you down, let the new year lift you up and smile.
