Sometimes it feels as if there is a very small percentage of college students who have not watched ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. Maybe it’s because I go to a big health science school where the majority of my friends are students in PT, OT, pre-med, nursing, and more. You never truly understand how flipping awesome this show is until you sit down and hit play on the first episode of season one. Trust me, you won’t regret the decision until you finish binging all 11 seasons on Netflix. If you need a preview to this experience you’re about to have, read the rest of this article and then you can consider yourself truly prepared.
1. "My spirit animal is 100 percent Meredith Grey.”
In the first episode, Meredith Grey, the show’s main character, has a bunch of these internal thoughts that she shares with us during the episode. My personal favorite quote, “I can't think of a single reason why I should be a surgeon, but I can think of a thousand reasons why I should quit.” Same here, Meredith. We can all think of a thousand reasons why we should quit our respective majors.
2. "I think I'm in love."
Fondly referred to as McDreamy, neurosurgeon Derek Shepard has beautiful eyes, a beautiful face, a beautiful smile… We are all kind of in love with him. No matter who you are or what your type is, I can bet you will dig him at least a little bit.
3. "I can totally do that."
This thought is one that you will have many, many times. From removing glass from a wound to something like a pancreaticoduodenectomy (usually called a Whipple). Once you watch the staff of SGH perform a few surgeries, you’re itching to save lives.
4. "Maybe I should be pre-med."
The drama, the blood, the surgeries, the interesting cases; everything seems to incredibly awesome on this show. You look up quick information on changing your major to pre-med, then realize you would need four years of medical school and then you’d be an intern and then it just goes on and on from there… So maybe pre-med isn’t such a great idea after all for some of us.
5. "DON'T DO IT. DON'T DO IT. STOP!!!"
If you don’t sit up and swallow back the urge to scream at the screen when the wrong people kiss or your OTP breaks up or they accidentally kill your favorite patient, then you aren’t invested enough.
6. "I'm going to run out of tissues."
Grey’s is full of deaths. Main characters, secondary characters… doctors and patients and families alike. It’s as if the writers just knew that they were going to be tugging on your heartstrings with every episode they write.
7. "I hope this show never ends."
Once you dip your toe in the water, prepare to want to dive in head first. Grey’s isn’t something you watch every now and then. It isn’t something you casually watch a few episodes and give up for three weeks. It’s something you start watching, and suddenly you’re a few seasons in and you don’t know how to come up for air. In other words, don’t start this show a week before finals if you want to pass.
