Thoughts That Go Through Your Mind When Your Younger Sibling Starts Dating:
I am the oldest sibling in my family, and with that comes certain responsibilities. Up until this point, those responsibilities have included enforcing rules, making sure the little one does their chores, and being the mediator in arguments between other family members. Basically, my role has always been to prepare my younger sibling for the outside world, by giving advice and answering questions. However, this all changed when I realized that the person who I wrestled to the ground so that they would do my chores, is currently in a relationship with the opposite sex. On top of all my normal duties as the older sibling, I now have to make sure that my little brother is respectful and treats his girlfriend right.
So many questions ran through my mind and I needed answers quick. Naturally, I bombarded his cell phone with text message after text message to get all the facts. These questions included, How did you meet? Where did you meet? How did you ask her out? What were you thinking? Does Mom know? Why do you like her? etc. You get the point.
This also lead me to discover that little brothers are not the best at answering questions over text messages; especially when those questions are in regards to their brand new relationship with a girl (like an actual human girl). I guess they don't understand the fact that I have to know every single detail in order to be ok with any part of the situation.
Of all the things I don't know, like how someone could possibly date in middle school, or how people can change so fast in just a couple of months; I do know that no matter what I will always love my family. Sometimes we argue, and push each others buttons, but I will always end up supporting their choices even if I don't understand them in the beginning.
All my love,
Emma
