In the last few weeks, thousands of college freshman have moved in and have officially become college students. I am one of these such freshman. Here’s a look into the thoughts racing through my, and likely many other first-year student’s, mind during the start of this amazing, new phase of life.

After all moved in and have said goodbyes :

1. Wow, the moment I have been waiting for is here. I AM a college student!

2. I guess I need to meet people and not hide in my dorm

3. My parents are gone…. No rules!

4. (As showers for the first time in a cramped stall) I have never felt more claustrophobic in my life.

During Orientation:

  1. Wow, I have said my name and what I want to study sooooo many times I am starting to introduce myself in my sleep.
  2. How is my dorm room already so messy? Can it magically clean itself up?
  3. How do I know who will be a friend and who will be someone I meet just once?
  4. Each person I am meet seems so nice. I want to be friends with everyone.
  5. I cannot remember all these names. C’mon memory, don’t blank out and embarrass me.
  6. I could fall asleep standing up right now. Who knew meeting new people could be so exhausting?
  7. Do people go out this much once classes start?
  8. Oh my, people stay up so late in college. So much for getting to sleep before two a.m.

On the first day of classes:

  1. I need look up where my classes are before leaving for them so I don’t make it even more obvious that I’m a confused freshman.
  2. (As reads the first syllabus) This class moves REALLY quickly. I misshigh school already.
  3. (As is running late to 9 a.m. class because slept past alarm) I thought waking up for a 9 a.m. class would be no big deal. I guess not?
  4. Why are textbooks SO EXPENSIVE? What happened to the days when they were free in high school?!
  5. (As sees the 100 pages ofreading assigned on the first day): I guess I am going to live in the library.

At various times during the first weeks:

  1. I am definitely going to avoid the freshman fifteen (said as eating tons of fries).
  2. Why have I not yet made friends as close to the ones as I had in high school ?
  3. What do I want to do with my life? I have no idea!
  4. I don’t miss home at all… (2 hours later) Oh wait, I really miss home!
  5. Wow, I love college already. I am surrounded by so many brilliant, amazing people who will change the world someday. I am so excited for these next four years!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
