Thoughts On The 19th Year

Because maybe I don't want to get "old" just yet.

Thoughts On The 19th Year

As my final week of my 18th year begins to wrap up, I can honestly say that nothing about being 19 seems very thrilling to me. Out of all the ages you can be, I think age 19 is probably the most insignificant. Sure, I am turning another year older, but that just means I am one step closer to real adulthood. Life after college? I do not want to get closer to actually thinking about that. Last year of my teens? Cool, but it is still not hitting the monumental 21st birthday.

What about 19 is fun?

You are not 18 anymore, and yet you are still one year away from reaching the second decade mark. At 19, you are just stuck in the middle of fresh young adulthood; and wow, I beat teen pregnancy.

The 19th year is so insignificant, no one really even cares that it is your birthday! I mean, sure, I hope I get a few birthday wishes, but I won't receive the "congrats on being legal" because that time is over. (By the way, who even invented that phrase? You have always been a legal citizen... right?) It's not as cool as age 15, 16 or 17 either because you are not being granted any new rights. It feels like I have been able to drive and see R-rated movies forever now. So, what's new? Nothing.

Now, I am not saying a birthday is only significant if you are granted new rights because after age 21, you get squat. I am just feeling a little reluctant to turning 19.

But, you know what, even though 19 is a significant age, it does not have to be a significant year. I am excited for all that will happen in my 19-year-old life, and I hope I make the most of it.

Peace out, 18-year-old me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
