I'm going to continue covering characters that are main players in "Captain America: Civil War." I've already written short articles on Captain America, Bucky Barnes and Iron Man. In this article, I'm going to write about Natasha Romanoff, also known as the Black Widow.
Natasha is one of a few characters fans theorize may switch sides during the movie. While I don't know as much about her role in the comics, we don't know much about Natasha's motives in the MCU version of Civil War. Unlike Tony, Natasha's reasons for her choice of side isn't nearly as obvious. Tony's reasoning has been made pretty clear, especially after the events of Age of Ultron. That, combined with everything Tony says in the previews, has clearly laid out his motives for his actions in this movie. For Natasha, on the other hand, there's been no such exposition.
One of the main reasons that many think Natasha will switch sides is Clint Barton. Even though the two are master assassins, it's fairly obvious that they're best friends. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to fight on a different side as my best friend. Although, depending on how strong Natasha's (yet unknown) convictions are for her place on Team Iron Man, this may not be enough to convince her to switch sides.
Another reason some think she might change sides is because of her relationship with Steve Rogers. Across the movies we've had so far, they seem to have become fairly close. Some even thought there were hints of a future romance between them during Captain America: Winter Soldier. However, in Age of Ultron, we saw a romance seem to develop between Natasha and Banner. Although, we don't know if we'll see a continuation of that. Now, in my opinion, even if Steve and Natasha are never romantically involved, I could see why she'd choose his side over Tony's in the long run. Her relationship to Steve does seem to be closer than her relationship with Tony. That, combined with Clint Barton's position in all this, makes a reasonable argument for Natasha flipping on Tony and the rest of Team Iron Man.
I can't say for sure whether or not this will happen, but, as I said, I can certainly see that this is a reasonable theory. Natasha Romanov, however, is not the only character that some fans suspect may flip sides. Some think that the Vision would switch sides and that it would spark the beginning of the relationship between Wanda and Vision that takes place in the comics. But I'll cover that in more detail in my next article in this series.
