It’s Thanksgiving Break ya’ll. The greatest time of the year right before the other best time of the year. The time when college students get to drive anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours to go home just to consume large amounts of food. Large amount of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, mac and cheese, pie, pie, and more pie. Here are some thoughts on the way home as your parents excitedly expect the arrival of their greatest disappointment.
1. Thinking about all the gifts your parents got you as you’ve been away. Aa pre-Christmas fantasia. Every time you talk to your mom she makes it seem like she accidentally slipped up on a huge secret, hinting you that there’s yet another gift waiting for you at home. If only all those gifts were just a bunch of puppies. Well, a college student can hope.
2. Knowing you’re going home to be pampered. Getting your nails done, a massage ready for you, not having to do the dishes or laundry, and just living it up in your castle with your loyal servants; who also happen to be your birth givers. Oh well, it’s their choice.
3. Imagining the buckets of homemade delicious food you’re going to get to consume. Nothing undercooked or simple or microwaveable. Everything specialty and fantastic and delightful. A wonderland of food. It’s just like in Spy Kids when Carmen and Juni get stuck in that land where everything is candy and junk food. Ah, good times.
4. Not having to wake up for any classes for a whole week. The joy of turning off your 30 alarms because you can’t manage to get up at 11 am for the life of you. Sleeping in the pitch black room your dad has managed to black out confusing the heck out of you when you wake up at 2 pm and its complete darkness all around you. The wonders of waking up thinking you’re late for your chem lab...
...just to realize you’re on break, and returning to your peaceful slumber.
5. Last but most definitely not least, getting to see your animal. Whether it’s your cat or dog or guinea pig or rodent. Just seeing the joy in their eyes and the wagging of their tail, their soft purrs, and absent but recognizable looks just warms your heart. They’ve missed you just as much as you’ve missed them and they may even maybe a little frightened knowing you will be taking them hostage for the next week.
All in all I hope everyone has a beautiful break. Enjoy tons of food and the company of your possibly chaotic and insane family and just be grateful for the wonderful parts of your life. Have a safe ride home and thank your parents for being your lovely supporters while your off in your own little world of college working your butt of but compensating for it by getting as drunk as you possibly can on the weekends. Just maybe throughout the drunk part. And have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
