Thoughts During A Summer Class
bLAwgical Thinking

Summer classes are never fun especially when you have The Praxis to study for. This summer I took a biology course at a local county college and these are some of the thoughts that popped in my head while sitting in the class.

  1. I hope this class is easy!
  2. Is she really going into a lecture after reviewing the syllabus?
  3. Can this girl in front of me stop turning around?
  4. Why is she staring at me?
  5. I am not about to buy that textbook for close to two hundred dollars.
  6. WHY is the lab necessary for this class?
  7. Wait, what did she just say about cellular respiration?
  8. Can she slow down?
  9. I’m only on my second cup of coffee.
  10. This class is two hours long and it's 35 minutes in and I’m already behind.
  11. I should probably buy that textbook so that I understand this after the lecture.
  12. I think I want to leave.
  13. I should have gone to sleep earlier
  14. I’m exhausted.
  15. Good thing I have work after this!
  16. I need to buy a new planner.
  17. Lily Pulitzer or Spartina?
  18. That is such a hard decision.
  19. She needs to slow down, I can’t comprehend any of this.
  20. Good thing this has nothing to do with my major, why am I in this class?
  21. I didn’t understand any of that review
  22. Hey wait I knew that one answer!
  23. Why are there so many questions on one review for one chapter?
  24. These chairs are so uncomfortable
  25. I have to copy my notes when I get home
  26. I want to go shopping so bad, why am I so broke?
  27. I need more coffee.
  28. A quiz, exam, and lab practical in one week?
  29. I need to color code my notes.
  30. Goodbye social life for the next five weeks.
  31. This is a lot harder than I remember in high school.
  32. What was that song that to remember cellular respiration?
  33. I’m craving chocolate
  34. When this class ends I am going to Starbucks to get a Frappuccino...a well deserved Frappuccino.
  35. I just can’t wait to be in Italy.
  36. One more year of college and then I graduate.
  37. I want to throw a fourth of July party, I wonder what Melyssa is doing.
  38. Who should I invite?
  39. Glycolysis is the oxidation of glucose, seems easy enough to remember.
  40. Why is glycolysis so involved?
  41. So two ATP molecules just disappear?
  42. I didn’t know I signed up for a magic show…
  43. Kind of want to go to the gym, but I also want to get an A.
  44. I wonder what my dog is doing right now
  45. Class is finally done!
  46. That was the longest two hours of my life.
  47. Starbucks here I come!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
