If you have Netflix, you may have noticed the arrival of the latest season of "Marvel’s Daredevil."
This season is not as dark, both visually and thematically, as last season was. However, that is not to say that this season doesn’t deal with some heavy themes. There is gore, violence, sexual themes and some slight happiness.
All in all, it is a well-rounded season.
The Punisher, one of my least favorite characters in the comics, absolutely steals the show in almost every scene he is in. Jon Bernthal does wonders for the character of Frank Castle, and is quite honestly one of my favorite characters this season. If Marvel and Netflix pursued a series that centered on him, I would definitely watch it. When we first meet him, he is stalking the halls of the hospital in search of a gang member who got away. Audiences may remember Bernthal as Shane, the former friend and enemy of Rick Grimes on AMC’s "The Walking Dead." Trust me, he completely shakes that persona and you will forget he was ever on that show.
The next breakout star is Elodie Yung who plays Elektra Natchios, a deadly assassin who was once involved with Matt Murdock. Let me just say that Elektra is not a nice woman, nor is she completely nonredeemable. Throughout the series, you see the effect she has on herself and the people around her and it leaves you wondering where her morality lies. Is she good or is she bad?
Like Castle, she is also an anti-hero, and it makes an interesting contrast with Daredevil who we know is a hero, no matter how conflicted he is about what he does. But it is that is what makes him a hero, whereas the other two don’t necessarily feel remorse for their actions.
Without saying too much, plot lines from the previous season are also expounded upon, with a few awesome surprises.
I had some minor issues with this season, such as the midseason lull that plagues most shows, even those with Marvel in the title (re: Jessica Jones). Another issue I had was Karen’s new profession at the end of the season, but that is an article for a later time.
My biggest complaint is the lack of connectivity to the rest of the MCU. We know that Marvel's Jessica Jones takes place in Hell's Kitchen, but why don't we actually see her? Sure, she is mentioned by name, but there is no actual appearance of her character.
This season isn't entirely perfect, but it is pretty close. We also see more of Matthew Murdock as a lawyer instead of a vigilante, and even more of Foggy Nelson as something other than comic relief.
The fight scenes are just as good as the previous season, with gunman and ninja alike taking action and subsequently being beaten.
I would definitely watch this season. The story line is gripping and the character development is astounding. While ABC Marvel is not as strong, Netflix Marvel is definitely where it is at. Never fear the quality or the acting because all of it is good.
