I don’t know about you, but for me, freshman orientation was an emotional roller coaster. It was filled with ups and downs and fear and excitement of the unknown. And while it was definitely an exciting time, there were also definitely some awkward moments that came from it. Here are 25 things that will be most likely running through your head while you’re there.
1. OK, this won’t be so bad. Everyone there will be just as nervous as me.
2. Oh god, why do my parents have to come.
3. Oh, so parents weren’t required to come?! Thank you for informing me. NOT! Everyone else’s parents probably didn’t come, and now I’m going to look like the freak child who had to have their parents come with them.
4. Oh wait, most people’s parents are here. Thank goodness.
5. OK, time to say goodbye to Mom. Please don’t cry, Mother.
6. Of course she cried. Yep definitely got some weird stares for that one.
7. All right, time to meet my temporary roommate for the night.
8. They don’t seem that bad. Oh, you won’t be coming back to the room tonight? That’s fine, just leave me then.
9. Wow, I feel like a loner.
10. I wish I knew someone here so I don’t look so friendless.
11. OK, time to make friends. Maybe if I just look over and say hello…
12. Oh, wow, here we go with the games.
13. Does anyone even want to do icebreakers? Are those even a thing still?
14. I wonder if all college classes are going to be this cheesy and goofy.
15. I wonder if I will join Greek Life. They make it seem so fun. Yep, I will probably join. Oh wait, dues are how much? That’s fine. I didn’t need my kidney anyway.
16. Hmm, they make these clubs sound so interesting. I will probably join them all and then never participate.
17. Alright, free time…what am I even supposed to do?
18. I wonder if I am going to be friends with these people after we all come back in the fall.
19. Will my orientation guide remember me? Am I supposed to wave if I see her in the hallway?
20. All right, finally bed time. Ugh, I am exhausted.
21. Oh, that's right I have a roommate now. Oh, this is so awkward. We are both just on our phones.
22. Am I supposed to say goodnight? Or should I just roll over and go to sleep?
23. I wonder if it’s going to be this awkward with my actual roommate.
24. Hmm, today wasn’t so bad; it was actually kind of fun.
25. Oh wait, I still have all of tomorrow to get through.
Whether these thoughts are true for you, or whether you have already gone through orientation, it can be a scary time for anyone. The main thing to remember is that every other person there probably feels the same way. And even though it can be terrifying, it's an experience that helps you get accustomed to the school that you chose for the next four years.
