Steven Universe is a fun, adventurous kid's cartoon with beautiful animations and catchy tunes.
But that's not all it is.
Four seasons in, Steven Universe has wowed me with its deep messages and important life lessons. What a wonderful program for kids to learn from and enjoy (as well as, of course, all of the adult viewers, myself included). In that time, we follow Steven Universe, an easygoing, compassionate boy (who is part Gem), as he saves the Earth with his alien friends, the Crystal Gems. All of the characters have their own personalities and attributes, as well as flaws to overcome. Personal growth intermixed with adventure and humorous shenanigans make each 11-minute episode meaningful and delightful.
Here's 14 of the many life lessons to be gained from this lovely cartoon with titles of episodes that exemplify each lesson.
Now let's "take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust."
1. Denying your feelings is unhealthy (Mindful Education)
You have to confront and acknowledge your emotions and negative thoughts to process your experiences and grow from them.
2. Personal agency (Beach City Drift)
You are your own individual entity. You can't control others, but you can control how you react to hurtful behavior. While you may rightfully feel upset or angered by someone, you can deal with it and move on.
3. Being open to forgiveness and talking about the past (Mr. Greg)
Taking in this life lesson can overcome long-held grudges, salvage a relationship and lead to a better future.
4. What healthy relationship dynamics look like (any episode really)
5. And unhealthy ones (Island Adventure)
6. Family doesn't have to be related to you by blood (Drop Beat Dad)
7. Love makes you stronger (Jailbreak Part 2)
8. Body positivity (Story for Steven)
People come in different shapes and sizes and they are all worthy of love and respect.
9. Your past doesn't define you. Anyone can change (Message Received)
Our early experiences shape who we become. Learning and exposure to love and kindness can put people on a healthier developmental tack (including villainous, green alien nerds).
10. Appreciate yourself (Kindergarten Kid)
You will be happier and healthier if you try to appreciate your own unique self and skills instead of comparing yourself to others. Everyone has their own strengths to take pride in and weaknesses to work on.
11. Some choices are hard to make (Bismuth)
Sometimes you have to make tough, upsetting choices, choosing to uphold your principles even if it means going against what others say.
12. Don't let yourself be taken advantage of to please your family or friends (Kiki's Pizza Delivery Service)
Picking up their slack whenever they ask is not worth your emotional well being.
13. Have empathy and compassion for all walks of life, even if others don't (Monster Reunion)
You don't know if you can truly help someone unless you try. Whether their different from you, or in need of help, treat them like you'd want to be treated.
