The Super Bowl is an exciting time where football fans get pumped to come out to support their teams. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, and part of this experience that will live on for years and years to come is the halftime show. Leading up to the big night is the anticipation and excitement from fans to see their favorite artists put on the show of their lives. However, this years performers failed in every aspect.
The first downfall of this halftime show is Coldplay. Don’t get me wrong- I love Coldplay as much as the next guy. Nonetheless, they literally killed the party out of the Super Bowl. Coldplay is literally on a list for artists that will put you to sleep. Their overly emotional, sappy music just does not work with the Super Bowl. As they are performing, there is a montage playing in the background of past Super Bowl halftime performers. Whether they were trying to be commemorative or nostalgic, it was totally pointless. Though, the lighting throughout the shows is beautiful, it was still daytime and it felt like you were at Coachella.
Then, Beyonce emerges debuting her new song "Formation." She had an amazing entrance fit for a queen like herself. Everything from her outfit to her choreography was totally boss. As she is singing with Coldplay, it is incredibly awkward, because Chris Martin is on one side of the stage and Beyonce on the other side singing "Paradise." Then, out of nowhere, Bruno Mars, channeling MC Hammer, pops out with Mark Ronson for “Uptown Funk” and a “Crazy in Love” duet with Beyonce. The entire time I am so confused on what is actually going on. Towards the end, all three performers come back together to do some song promoting peace. Though it was touching, it was just so random.
This Super Bowl performance lacked any clear direction or organization. Everything was just coming out of nowhere, and it felt so out of place. Besides the NFL should have hired someone other than Coldplay, like Missy Elliot, Bruce Springsteen or even Kanye West. I have to say, Coldplay’s lighting was beautiful and intricate, though it would have been even nicer at nighttime, along with the fireworks. Another aspect for next time is a longer halftime show. The show was under 15 minutes. A good five minutes is just the intro of the artists coming on stage. That left only 10 minutes for actual music. Overall, this Super Bowl experience was not captivating at all. It lacked stage presence and energy that made us forget all about it the next day.
