Some days are historical, and everybody knows it. Days such as July 4th, September 11th, and December 25th. However, most days hold historical significance that people don't even recognize or have forgotten.
March 21st: Twitter is Founded - 2006
Twitter, which was originally title twttr, was founded on this day in 2006. The social media site was created by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass. The first tweet was published by Dorsey at 9:50 PM Pacific Time and read "just setting up my twttr." The site has since grown to around 332 million active users.
March 22nd: The Beatles Release Their First Album in the UK - 1963
The debut album of one of the biggest rock bands in history was released on this day 53 years ago. It's title song and single "Please Please Me" was released on January 11th in the United Kingdom and quickly rose to the top of many British charts. The album's release was subsequently moved up to capitalize on the success of the single. The album has been certified Platinum in the United States.
March 23rd: Patrick Henry's Famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Speech - 1775
Patrick Henry made this iconic speech at the Virginia Convention in Richmond, Virginia in 1775. The speech was made due to the fact that the convention was split was to whether to send Virginia troops to aid with the revolution against the approaching British. Henry was in favor of sending troops, he ended his speech with the iconic phrase, ""Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!"
March 24th: Elvis Presley is Drafted into the United States Army - 1958
Rock and roll fans everywhere were devastated when Elvis Presley was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army. Presley served from March 1958 to March 1960. Presley trained in Fort Hood and served in Friedberg, Germany.
March 25th: Civil Rights Activists Complete March from Selma to Montgomery, AL - 1965
After two halted attempts, Civil Rights activists, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., complete the 54 mile march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The first attempt at the march was made on March 7th, which came to be known as Bloody Sunday due to the fact that state troopers and other citizens of the county attacked marchers as they crossed the county line. The marchers were marching to show the desire for African-American citizens' right to vote.
March 26th: Ground Breaking for Vietnam Veterans' Memorial - 1982
The memorial, which honors those who fought and died or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. There are more than 58,000 names on the wall of the memorial, which is one part of the three part memorial. The memorial also features the Three Soldiers statue and the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
