An Open Letter To My Brother Who Doesn't Hear This Enough
Brittany Kasper

To my crazily amazing older brother,

As I begin my first year in college, you somehow have grown into your third year at Indiana University. I remember all of the countless tips you would tell me about how to get through my freshman year, such as:

“Remember to not be afraid to ask your professors for help.”

“Get a group of friends that you can really trust.”

“Mom is crazy so don’t get upset when she yells at you for not calling enough.”

“Enjoy the best four years of your life.”

I never took into account all the advice you gave me because I was oblivious to the fact I was entering a new chapter in my life all by myself. Even though I am entering my new life at Illinois State by myself, I know I have my older brother there for me. Even when you’re “too busy” to answer my calls (wow, I’m really sounding like a mom now), I know that no matter where life takes either of us, we will never be “too busy” for each other.

College is the craziest experience that has ever happened to me, and I’m loving every second of it. Becoming independent has never felt better, but I’m still working on adjusting to this new “college life.” I’m making a lot of new friends in my classes, and still talking to my friends from high school. The schoolwork and exams are starting to stress me out, but that’s what every college student goes through, right? I hope you’re having a blast your junior year of college, and I hope you’re learning so much from traveling across the country. Now that the both of us are in college, it might get tougher to see each other based on when we come home or when our seasonal breaks land. I remember every time you would come home from college, I would be so excited to pick you up from the bus station, and see how much you have changed.

Even though the both of us are attending college in different states, I’m still going to be your little sister and you’re still going to be my older brother. I can already tell these next couple years in college are going to be tough, but I know you will be there for me through it all. I cannot believe how fast we have grown, and how life is catching up to us. Soon enough we will be starting our own lives, and starting our futures. I am so excited to see what the future holds for you because I know it will be filled with nothing but success. Because we are on the topic of success, I would like to say thank you for everything you have done for me to make me the successful person I am today. Thank you for consistently telling me to do my homework. Thank you for helping me with my work for countless hours, even though you had your own priorities to do. Thank you for being the best role model I could have. Thank you for agreeing with me on how crazy mom is. Thank you for being the best older brother I could ask for. Thank you for being my best friend.

Your little sister,

Brittany

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
