I love to write. There is something about writing that just relaxes my mind and frees my soul. Yet the question remains: why do I write? It just seems like "relaxing" and "freedom" do not seem like the right answers. However, I can answer that I love to write poetry and fiction the most with children's stories being a close third. We all have our reasons to write. Some people write for joy and pleasure while others write out of pain and depression. Here are my reasons. This is why I write.
I have written during high and low points in my life, especially during my final year at college. No matter what, I kept writing. The words I wrote seemed to flow nonstop and it got to a point that I was possessed for a short time. An entire month went by and I filled up a quarter length of a journal with poems I either wrote myself or from other meaningful poets, or quotes that mean something to me. I am still writing in it today whenever I find something I like and want to remember for a later day in life.
When it comes to poems, I like to write for people. During the month of April, I always choose a day and make a post that celebrates National Poetry Month by writing a quick poem on people's wall. It is always either a Haiku, which can be hilarious and fun, or a four line poem. It really brings me pure joy when the finished product puts a smile on a person's face. It is like making a child laugh for the first time.
I always love to broaden my imagination when I write. I used to have multiple notebooks filled with words and stories about the end of the world and the zombie apocalypse with me being the hero in a situation that calls upon being a hero. I always tried to create a new universe in my writing, or at least expand on a known universe with some fan fiction ("Star Wars" with "Lord of the Rings" crossovers mostly).
Now comes the part about writing for Odyssey; I love it because I get to continue writing about what I want to write about, but in a different style. I am not used to writing nonfiction and being informative, but it has been a fun challenge that I am ever so grateful to do. It has helped me broaden my knowledge and build my skills as a writer.
So why do I write? It is really simple. I write because it is a substitute to acting. Instead of getting involved in another person's story (script) and making the story come to life, I like to make my own story with characters people can fall in love with. That is my ultimate goal. We all have something to say. So what is your story?
"You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say." ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
