Majority of college students land internships in the city because that is where a majority of companies are hiring; well, at least for interns. The city is so fast paced and there is always so much going on. There’s something new to see every day and you’ll be shocked as to what it is you will see in the city. For most people the city can be overwhelming but for me, it’s something I can handle with no problem. You have to learn how to work the train system and the subway system, depending on where it is you are going in the city. Then you have to learn all the streets, but it is really not that hard because the city is like one big grid and everything is numbered. All I know is whoever thought of creating the city that way is a genius, it makes everyone’s lives 10 times easier.
There is a lot of crazy stuff you will see going on in the city. There are millions of people everywhere and you never see the same person every day. First, there are the bums who try and get you to give them money and buy them food. You can’t always give in to the bums because you are working hard for your money and sometimes giving it away to someone who doesn’t even try to better themselves is not the right idea. Oh did I fail to mention that they smell and are nasty; just stay far away. Then you have the Times Square characters that walk around all day taking pictures with tourist. If you take a picture with them they will expect money and they are nasty when you don’t give them something. I see it happen every day.
Then you have the crowded trains and subways. Don’t ever expect to get a seat unless you are one of the very first people on the train or subway. It gets so crowded sometimes you can even breathe. The bums are on the subways too so watch out. The city is so expensive you’ll learn that it's better of you to pack a lunch for the day, unless you want to pay $20.00 for a salad then be my guest. But chopped is an exception.
Sometimes it is nice though to be in the city surrounded by the chaos because if you're someone like me, who grew up with a lot of chaos, you won’t really mind it.
But as for being an intern I can’t stress enough how great the experience is, you learn so much and being in such a fast paced environment; like New York City gives you the opportunity to grow as an individual. It teaches you where you really want to go in life and what it takes to accomplish what you’ve always wanted.
And, for me, that is interning in the city.
But there is nothing like going back home at the end of the day to your quiet hometown.
